Project Background
Students will participate in an expedition uncovering math and science concepts around the topic of energy. Throughout this project, students will encounter significant time outdoors using the snowpack to learn basic concepts of radiation, convection, conduction, and insulation. In addition, students will be introduced to solar energy, surface radiation, photosynthesis, waves, and wind energy. The meat of this project allows students to expand on their knowledge and discover where these topics play out in their community and beyond.
We have asked the students to support the idea of a community tour that focuses on the great things our community is doing in the field of energy stewardship. Students will self reflect on their impact and role to be played in the responsibility of being a steward of energy. In addition, students will use their science background to better understand the why behind each concept they encounter. After a time of exploration and investigation, students will creatively innovate a really interesting idea on how a tour could be developed to engage the community. Students will flesh out ideas on their version of an ideal tour and share their ideas in a “board room presentation.”
