Project Background (Gone Fishin')
In this investigation, students will contribute to an ongoing investigation (Hope College) into the growth and development rates of fish in our local ponds. In order to participate in this endeavor, students will have to go fishing to collect meaningful data on fish. Students will compare data from other ponds and previous studies to better understand the fish found in our local wetlands.
Another big piece to this project is connecting the work to all the possible factors that affect the life cycle of our fish. The first step in this is understanding the role of reproduction in our ponds and wetlands. The second step is connecting reproduction and life cycles to possible factors that affect or influence the outcomes. Topics such as cross breeding, reproductive habitat loss, invasive species, habitat quality, size of predators, and water quality need to be investigated.
Finally, students will use the creative sequence to bring fresh perspective to the life of fish within the Lake Macatawa watershed. At first glance, many people have misconceptions about the life of fish. Stream School students will uncover those misconceptions and provide fresh perspective by creating an art gallery in downtown Holland, MI.
